Romans (8a): chapter 7:1-12
If Christians are no longer under the Old Testament law, does that mean the law was sinful? Paul says absolutely not. In this first half of Romans 7, we examine Paul's marriage analogy — showing that just as death frees a spouse from the bond of marriage, so our death in Christ and the death of the old law frees us to be joined to Christ. From there, Paul explains the true purpose of the law: it wasn't the problem — it revealed the problem. The law exposed sin for what it is, and the commandment that was meant to bring life was turned to death by sin's deception. Understanding this is essential to grasping why salvation could never come through law-keeping alone.
