Sacrifice of The Son

a sermon series on the arrest, trials, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth

Road To The Cross

The execution of Jesus was a complete miscarriage of justice. How did it happen? What led to an innocent servant of God being tortured then put to death on an instrument of torture? This lesson highlight four factors leading to Jesus being put on a cross.

Passover and Prayer

The week leading up to the Lord's crucifixion was eventful with everything from His anointing at Bethany, the triumphal entrance into Jerusalem, debates with Jewish leaders, and much more. This lesson focuses on the events that took place Thursday of that week: the observance of the Passover by Jesus and His disciples, as well as His prayer in the garden.

Arrest and Trials (part 1)

Isaiah prophesied of the abuse and miscarriage of justice endured by our Lord (Isaiah 53:1-8). Men forsook and despised Him. He was rejected and condemned, but remained silent. The Lord did this so our iniquities could be taken away. Our minds ought to be impressed by His grace. Our hearts should be broken knowing it was done because of our sins. This lesson begins a look at the arrest and trials of Jesus.

Arrest and Trials (part 2)

Jesus was rejected and humiliated by men. These men were manipulated by the devil to execute the Son of God. These men were not free from guilt because they were motivated by their own selfish, stubborn will. They were ready and eager to demand the death of an innocent Man. This lesson continues a look at the trials Jesus faced, including His trial before Pilate who repeatedly declared the innocence of the Lord.

Crucifixion and Burial (part 1)

The crucifixion of Jesus was part of the most monumental event in history, the sacrifice of God's Son for the sins of the world. Everything from the Garden of Eden to John's preaching in the wilderness, from Abraham's call to Israel's Exodus, the rise and fall of world empires, these were all events that laid the foundation for the advent of the Son of God into the world. The people who witnessed the event surrounding the sacrifice of the Son did not comprehend what or why it was happening. This lesson helps us understand the reality of the Lord's suffering and how it gives us hope for everlasting life.

Crucifixion and Burial (part 2)

When Jesus went on trial before the Jews and Romans, He was mocked, abused, tortured, and murdered. Have you ever imagined what it would have been like to be there and witness these events? How unbelievably sad. How utterly terrifying. How shocking the magnitude of evil on display. This lesson examines the Lord's time on the cross, including the puzzling saying He uttered, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?"

Resurrection, Appearances, and Ascension (part 1)

Moses likened Jesus' death to a bruised heel (Genesis 3:15). Yet, Isaiah described it as a total miscarriage of justice (Isaiah 53). Jesus was tortured then crucified. So, how could it be like a bruised heel? It is because the suffering and death was temporary. Jesus did not remain in the grave, but overcame death to claim victory over His enemies (Colossians 2:11-15). This lesson is part 1 of an examination of His resurrection and appearances.

Resurrection, Appearances, and Ascension (part 2)

After the crucifixion and burial of Christ, the disciples were confused and bewildered (Acts 1;1-3). The One in whom they placed their hopes was dead. They did not know what would become of the movement He began or if they would be the next target of the Jewish leaders. However, Jesus did not leave them in despondency long. He came forth from the grave and appeared to them multiple times over a period of 40 days. This gave the confidence and conviction.
