The work of the local church is very limited in the New Testament. The main focus is teaching the lost and edifying the saints. A secondary work is providing material help to saints in need. In fact, Paul is clear on the subject stating that the family is the main source of help, while the church is only to step in when family is either not willing or able (1 Timothy 5:16).
